Like many parts of modern life, you can go digital when it comes to food scales (秤). If you want digital scales with an LCD display, then obviously you’ll need batteries which can run out at the most inconvenient of times. But the advantages of digital scales are many, including an accurate button which allows you to instantly remove the weight of an empty bowl, so you don’t need to do any maths calculations (计算). Mechanical (机械的)scales on the other hand have a pleasingly old-school reliability about them and undoubtedly add a touch of the style of the past to any kitchen. Read on for our top picks of mechanical scales, and digital scales, and balance scales.
EK backlit scales
A backlit display is an attractive feature. In addition to its good looks, it has an oversize digital display that is easy to read.
CN folding kitchen scales
When space is limited in your kitchen, you sometimes don’t want to buy another kitchen item. Folding kitchen scale is your best choice.
DM traditional cast iron balance kitchen scales
Cooking and baking isn’t all about time efficiency. It’s also about memories and the simple enjoyment of doing something that connects you.
MF 3-in-1 digital scales
We love the one that makes life easier by performing many functions. One part is a traditional balance, one part is a mixing bowl, and one part is a measuring pot, and the grade of the bowl itself allows accurate measurement of the liquid.
There are plenty of good reasons to prepare the best kitchen scales for your kitchen set up. More importantly, the sense of loss because of inaccuracy can be avoided. If you’ve got young kids, using scales is also a great way to add to their knowledge of weights and measures and to do some basic maths with them.
21. What is the feature of a mechanical scale
A. It has LCD display. B. It needs batteries
C. It is a little inaccurate D. It shows an old-fashioned style.
22. Which scales best suit people who have a small kitchen
A. EK backlit scales
B. CN folding kitchen scales
C. DM traditional cast iron balance kitchen scales
D. MF 3-in- 1 digital scales
23. What can be promoted in kids by using scales
A. Mechanics. B. Mathematics. C. Chemistry. D. Physics.

Making marks or signing names in the sand is a great fun for most travelers on a vacation beach. But for Dubai-based Filipino artist Nathaniel A. Alapide, it’s how he became a Guinness World Record holder
Dubai’s 72 kilometers coastline, and the vast Arabian Desert, are Alapide’s canvas (画布). Using only a simple garden tool, he draws enormous lines across the beaches an (deserts, making huge and complex designs. His average drawing is around 20 meters squared. When he includes a written message, the pieces can be more than 100 meters long.
Alapide’s sand art began in 2014, when he drew a tree in memory of his late grandmother on the beach, near Jumeirah Beach Hotel. The size of the drawing appealed to the hotel which offered him his first full-time job as a sand artist in 2015. Since then, he has decorated the sands with around 1,900 drawings. He’s been assigned by big brands, and he created a work for National Geographic for the program “The Emirates From Above”. In 2022, Alapide set a new record for the world’s largest sand image.
Though Alapide has crafted a career from the practice, he says creating an artwork from sand isn’t always plain sailing. “On the 20th day of creating the world-record piece, we were almost 70% done but there was this weather that happened,” he says. “It was raining, and the wind was so strong, which removed almost the whole piece.”
“I think where I find this kind of work interesting,” Alapide continues. He says that the temporary nature of his work reminds him that everything is in constant change. “And I think making sand art is a great way to connect with people,” he adds. “I like to watch how people interact with the work and I have found that the kids notice the drawings more than the adults. I think because they’re more aware of their environment.”
24. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about Alapide’s drawing
A. Its origin. B. Its size.
C. Its materials. D. Its features.
25. How did Alapide start his career of sand drawing
A. By decorating a hotel as required. B. By impressing a hotel with his work.
C. By transplanting a tree on the beach. D. By creating works for big brands.
26. What can we say about Alapide’s job according to paragraph 4
A. Challenging. B. Worthless. C. Influential. D. Impractical.
27. What does the last paragraph intend to convey
A. A candle lights others but consumes itself.
B. He who makes no mistakes makes nothing.
C. Happiness lies not in things, but in ourselves.
D. The longest journey begins with the first step

The drone (无人机) is flying above the Amazon River in Brazil, but its battery is running low. Andre Coelho, the chief pilot, guides it back to safety with skills perfected by playing video games. Long hours’ practicing has become a surprising benefit in an effort to conserve dolphins that live in the river. Marcelo Oliveira, a conservation specialist, stands on the bow of a boat, He pulls the white drone from the air, changes the battery, and quickly sends it back in the sky.
Later, scientists will examine the video which has recorded for signs of the two species of dolphins that inhabit the river: the pink and bulbous boto (亚马孙河豚), and the smaller, prettier tucuxi (白海豚). Exactly how many live in the basin is a mystery. Some studies have suggested a decline of the pink dolphins in specific areas of the Amazon River, but the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) says there isn’t enough data available for either species of dolphins.
“We need to base everything on hard data,” says Miriam Marmontel, a scientist. “We need to focus on what’s really critical to help us get to a real situation that can influence policy. We need numbers. We need information on death and reproduction.”
Marmontel’s biggest concern is that dolphins are being caught in the nets of local fisher- men. Scientists have also given a warning against fishermen’s killing botos. Pollution from gold mining is also a concern.
The scientists want to use the information they collect to persuade the IUCN to list the boto and the tucuxi as endangered species. Funding agencies and governments want evidence. Without the IUCN’s categorization, it’s difficult to/raise the money for protection measures.
They hope their drone monitoring will do the trick. During three trips to the Amazon last year, the team has recorded about 70 samples (样本) that will contribute to a more accurate estimate of dolphin populations in the Amazon basin.
28. What are Coelho and Oliveira doing in the Amazon River
A. Testing the drone they designed for fun.
B. Recording the video of the flowing river.
C. Collecting data on dolphins with a drone.
D. Playing a video game.
29. What can make Miriam Marmontel worry most according to the text
A. The fishermen’s living conditions.
B. The money for protection measures.
C. The pollution from the gold mining.
D. The dolphins being caught by fishermen.
30. What is the purpose of the drone monitoring
A. To raise money to protect the Amazon basin.
B. To urge governments to record Amazon species.
C. To find evidence for the need to take measures.
D. To get an exact number of species in the Amazon.
31. What is the author’s attitude to the drone monitoring in the text
A. Indifferent. B. Approving. C. Negative. D. Unclear.

Surprised scientists say they now have absolute proof that life exists on Jupiter (木星). They’re receiving SOS signals radioed from the destroyed planet! Off the record, NASA higher-ups are analyzing that the signals were caused by the recent strike of Jupiter by comet fragments (彗星碎片).
“Theses signals can only be coming from an intelligent (智慧的) life form,” says Dr. Lucas Mirsch, a highly respected planetary astronomer with close ties to NASA. “Contrary to what we’ve believed for years, we’re not alone in the solar system. And based on what we can tell from the mathematical pattern of these signals, the residents of the largest planet in our galaxy are asking Earth for help.” Dr. Mirsch says NASA officials have absolutely confirmed that Jupiter is the source of the strange signals, which began in late June—just weeks before the comet fragments began to hit the giant planet.
“NASA has investigated every possibility that this could be a hoax,” says Dr. Mirsch. That is, it may be a trick. “State-of-the-art sensors have traced the point of origin to the exact position of Jupiter’s orbit. There’s simply nowhere else they could be coming from.”
One of the specialists who has analyzed the mathematical pattern of the sounds says he and his staff are 99 percent sure the message is an SOS of some sort. “It’s difficult to explain to the public,” said the expert. “But the frequency with which certain numbers occur in a coded message gives us clues about its general content. Although we can’t give an exact word- for-word translation, we can say with reasonable certainty that life-and-death urgency is being communicated.”
NASA won’t officially comment but Dr. Mirsch says, “There’s not much the agency can do to help. All we can do now is pray that Jupiter survives this terrible strike and that our two worlds can make contact again soon.”
32. What can we learn from paragraph 2
A. The signals come from intelligent creatures
B. It was believed that we humans were not alone in the solar system
C. NASA officials are not sure whether the strange signals are from Jupiter.
D. Jupiter had been hit by comet fragments before the strange signals appeared
33. What does the underlined word “hoax” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Lie. B. SOS. C. Message. D. Reality.
34. What can NASA do with the signals now
A. Send messages to Jupiter B. Launch new satellites
C. Nothing but pray D. Destroy the comet fragments
35. What is the best title for the text
A. There Is Life Existing on Jupiter
B. Comet Fragments Recently Hit Jupiter
C. Jupiter Was Destroyed by Intelligent Life Form
D. Scientists Received Signals from Jupiter for Help

It was just another ordinary Monday morning, Jack had spent the entire night working on his social science project, making final edits to the video, and it was finally done. He was eager to present it in front of his class after working on it for three long weeks!
“No! No! I’m late! Again!” Jack cried as he kicked his blanket away. He hurriedly put on his clothes and rushed downstairs, taking his backpack and study materials quickly from the study table.
“I don’t have time for breakfast, Mom! I don’t even brush!” he said to his mother Amelia in a quiet voice who adopted Jack years ago.
Jack shut the front door behind him, jumped on his bike, and rode as fast as he could. He didn’t want to be late for Mr Dixon’s class.
Mr Dixon, Jack’s social science teacher, was a slow, older man who wasn’t particularly generous when it came to giving straight As to his students. But Jack was determined to get a good grade this time, so he’d worked super hard on his task.
Jack rushed over to his seat. Right then, Mr Dixon walked in. “Good morning, class!” he said, smiling tightly, “I believe we’re ready with our lesson ”
When it was time for Jack to, present his homework, he confidently approached Mr Dixon’s table and handed over his flash drive (闪存盘). Jack then turned to face the class and began briefing his classmates on his project before Mr Dixon managed to find the “correct” video quickly because the USB had only one file. As he played the video in front of the class, Mr Dixon expected to see Jack’s project. 8
Suddenly students began whispering as they watched the screen before them. Jack was frozen (惊呆) in place. Jack turned back and heard what his mother said, “... this is one of the most challenging times of my life. I have no idea how to tell Jack about it. His biological father (生父) recently contacted me, saying that he wanted to connect with him now after all these years of looking for Jack, and...”

W: Yeah, there will be five people including me. Why don’t you join us We’re getting to Keswick on Friday. Then we’re going to go boating on Saturday. And on Sunday, we’re going to do some shopping. Then I will take some time to visit my aunt Lucy.
M: You’re not going to camp, are you Isn’t it a bit cold
W: No, we’re not. It is a bit cold. We will stay in a country hotel. It’s not like five-star hotels or anything. But it’s really comfortable.
M: Hmm, sounds interesting. You know, it’s the boating that I don’t like.
W: Well, what are you going to do this weekend
M: Sit on my sofa at the weekend and watch TV. You know I haven’t watched TV for a long time. And I think it will be a busy weekend.
W: I don’t know how you can do that all the weekend, Gordon. I’d get bored.
M: I know, I know. But that’s really what I want to do.

W: Hello, everyone. I’d like to make a brief introduction to the British Library, which is the national library of the United Kingdom. The British Library was founded in 1973 and is one of the world’s greatest libraries. The library opens to the public from Monday to Saturday, except for public holidays. It has newspapers, popular publications as well as letters of historical value. The library’s collection has maps, photographs, art prints, movies, sound recordings and musical instruments. All together, it has more than 150 million items in its collection. It includes around 14 million books, along with plenty of handwritten and historical items dating back as far as 2,000 BC. It also has a wide collection of stamps of the world which are on show for visitors. The library also offers other events like music and discussion. The library is open to everyone who needs to use its collections. Anyone with an ID card who wishes to carry out research can apply for a reader pass; they are required to provide proof of address for security purposes.

Love Our Motherland with Small Action
Good morning, everyone! It’s my great honor to have the opportunity to share with you my opinions on loving our motherland with small action.
Nowadays, we teenagers often say how much we love our motherland, but are these words enough to show our devotion to motherland To express our love for motherland, we should just do small action. For example, we should protect our environment, obey laws and regulations, and show our love for our motherland through good behaviour. Besides, it is a good idea to work hard to build our motherland better in the future.
Our action is of greater significance than thousands of words. Let’s take action!
That’s all. Thanks for listening.

参考范文:
Jack was frozen and his cheeks grew red as he realized what had happened. He had brought the wrong USB to school! Instead of his project, his mother’s personal video was shown to the entire class! Mr Dixon quickly cut off the video, asking Jack to return to his seat. Then Mr Dixon managed to get the class back on track. But when sitting down, Jack couldn’t focus with his head dropping down, wondering why his mother had not told him the truth.
Soon the school was over, Mr Dixon offered to accompany Jack to his home. All the way, Mr Dixon said something to comfort Jack. When they met Jack’s mother, Mr Dixon explained all the things to her. “I’m sorry, Jack! I didn’t want the truth to come out this way. Forgive me, honey! I am always worrying that it would hurt you and ruin our relationship if you know the secret,” she cried. To her great surprise, Jack didn’t blame her. Instead, Jack hugged her, smiling, “I understand now, I love you, Mum.”
