I’m a seventeen-year-old boy preparing for my A Level exams at the end of the year. In the society where my peers (同龄人) and I live, we tend to accept the rat race values. As students, we want to get good grades so that we can get good jobs. I enjoy studying and have consistently received A’s in my classes. There was a year when I finished first in my class in the final exams. It was a great accomplishment.
Another one I am pleased with is that I managed to improve the relationship between Mum and Dad. Dad was a successful businessman who was rarely at home. Mum was a housewife who always felt bored and constantly nagged (唠叨) him to let her go to work. Their constant arguing bothered me, so I advised Dad that Mum would be better off with a part-time job. He agreed, and their relationship has improved since then.
My most proud achievement, however, is my successful work in the local old folks’ home. My grandparents had raised me since I was a child. I wept (哭泣) bitterly when they died. Unlike many of my classmates, I do not take part in my school’s community service to earn points. I enjoy my voluntary work and believe I’m contributing to a worthwhile cause. This is where I can help. I talk to the elderly, assist them with their daily life, and listen to their problems, glory days and the hardships they experienced.
Last year, I hosted a successful New Year party for the elderly and they enjoyed a great time. Many expressed a desire to attend another party the following year. When I reflect on my accomplishments, I’m especially proud of my service at the old folks’ home, so I hope to study social work at university and work as a social worker in the future. I wish to be more skilled in attending to the less fortunate as well as find great satisfaction in it, after all.
4. What can be inferred about the author from the first paragraph
A. His good grades got him a good job.
B. He refuses to compete with his peers fiercely.
C. His views on social values are well known.
D. He is content with his scholastic achievements.
5. Which role does the author play in his parents’ relationship
A. A helper. B. A judge. C. A monitor D. A supporter.
6. What is the greatest accomplishment for the author
A. The contribution to volunteering. B. The success in exams.
C. The recovery of confidence in life. D. The work in community service.
7. Why does the author want to major in social work at university
A. To gain a well-paid job. B. To give his life a purpose.
C. To meet his grandparents’ expectations. D. To better help the disadvantaged.
D 5. A 6. A 7. D

It can be incredibly difficult to encourage ourselves to go for a run during winter, particularly when it’s wet and windy outside. But new research has found that even a super-quick run could have great health benefits. In fact, it seems that just a 10-minute session will not only make us feel better, but could actually improve brain health, too. Now, we all know that exercise can improve mental and physical health in many ways.
But when it comes to mental well-being, there’s been relatively little research done on the specific benefits of running, compared with other physical activities, such as cycling. So this was something put to the test during a recent study. Researchers from University of Tsukuba in Japan asked participants (参加者) to run on a treadmill (跑步机) for just 10 minutes. They then had to take a Stroop Color and Word Test which is used to measure reaction time in brain processing. Results showed there was a highest point in self-reported pleasure and an increase in degree of activity of the brain.
In other words, runners were found to have an increase in blood flow in the part of the brain that’s associated with dealing with functions and controlling mood (情绪). Researchers then compared these results to a similar study on cycling, which also showed improved cognition (认知), but no mood improvement. Therefore, it seems various types of exercise can make us feel differently.
The authors noted, “Given exercise is medicine, the effects of drugs differ depending on the type of drug, and different types of exercise such as running and cycling should be observed to have different effects on mental health and brain functions as well.”
So pushing ourselves to get outside for a run really will make us feel better, probably more than other fitness activities. And these findings show that we don’t necessarily need to do a lot of exercise to feel the benefit of it.
8. What did the new research find
A. Running fast benefits all of us.
B. Running is the best exercise.
C. A short time run can be beneficial.
D. A healthy mind encourages us to run.
9. How did the researchers get the result
A. By using different drugs on participants.
B. By interviewing some sportsmen.
C. By collecting information on the Internet.
D. By doing experiments and comparisons.
10. Which is related to our happiness
A. Cycling. B. Medicine. C. Blood flow. D. Colors.
11. What is the main idea of the text
A. We should go for a run in winter.
B. Running really benefits us mentally.
C. We don’t need a lot of exercise.
D. Running on a treadmill is better than running outside.

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the term “couch potato” first appeared in print in a December, 1979 edition of the Los Angeles Times. Since then, it has become a familiar term for a person who spends a lot of time sitting, and little time exercising. Although there does not seem to be any particular reason why the term “couch potato” is used rather than “couch tomato”, a person may become a “couch potato” because living this way is said to make you round like a potato. The term is also said to have something to do with the high-calorie (卡路里) food like potato chips.
People now would say “couch potato” whenever they talk about overweight and obesity (肥胖). Indeed, “couch potatoes” are believed to have heart disease risks, which can be avoided by regular exercise.
It is true that technology and modern life in general make us sick, fat, lazy and physically/mentally soft. The more time people spend using technology, particularly televisions and computers, the less time they will spend being physically active.
“Couch potato” kids are a particular concern. Media reports repeatedly claim that children today are fatter than their elder generations, but less athletically skilled, less interested in physical activities and more addicted to “junk food” and technology such as televisions and computers. The message is clear: today’s children are fat because they are lazy and eat too much. Moreover, because technology is becoming more sophisticated, children are less able to resist (抵抗) technology’s attraction, and are more likely to spend more time using technology, less time doing physical activities and, therefore, more likely to be fat.
12. The first paragraph is mainly about____.
A. what kind of person looks like a couch potato
B. why “couch potato” is used as a term for a person
C. when “couch potato” is used as a term for a person
D. how “couch potato” is different from “couch tomato”
13. It’s kids’________that people are particularly concerned about.
A. food B. study C. health D. hobby
14. The underlined word “sophisticated” in the last paragraph may mean_______.
A. boring B. different C. complex D. simple
15. According to the passage, the author may suggest that, ________.
A. scientists should stop their technology research
B. parents should take better care of their children
C. kids should be prevented using new technology
D. people should spend less time using technology
B 13. C 14. C 15. D

根据第一段“Although there does not seem to be any particular reason why the term “couch potato” is used rather than “couch tomato”, a person may become a “couch potato” because living this way is said to make you round like a potato. The term is also said to have something to do with the high-calorie (卡路里) food like potato chips. (虽然没有什么特别的理由说明为什么用“沙发土豆”而不是“沙发番茄”,但一个人可能会成为“沙发土豆”是因为据说这种生活方式会让你像土豆一样圆。据说这个词还与薯片等高热量食物有关)”可知,第一段主要介绍了“沙发土豆”被用来形容人的原因。故选B。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段““Couch potato” kids are a particular concern. Media reports repeatedly claim that children today are fatter than their elder generations, but less athletically skilled, less interested in physical activities and more addicted to “junk food” and technology such as televisions and computers.
根据第三段“It is true that technology and modern life in general make us sick, fat, lazy and physically/mentally soft. The more time people spend using technology, particularly televisions and computers, the less time they will spend being physically active.(的确,科技和现代生活总体上使我们生病、肥胖、懒惰和身心软弱。人们花在科技产品上的时间越多,尤其是电视和电脑,他们花在体育锻炼上的时间就越少)”可推知,作者的观点是希望大家能少依赖科技,远离电脑电视等,并且多加强锻炼。故选D。

I’ve dealt with a fair share of negative (消极的) people in my life. Here, I’ll share with you several tips on dealing with negative people in your life.
One of the most important things I learned is not to debate with a negative person. A negative person likely has very firm views and isn’t going to change that. Just because of what you said. ____16____ The discussion will just turn into more negativity, and you pull yourself down in the process. You can give helpful comments and if the person argues with no signs of backing down, don’t go further.
Some people complain as a way of crying for help. They may not be conscious (意识到) of it, though. ____17____ Take the responsibility to lend a helping hand. Just a simple “Are you okay ” or “Is there anything I can do to help you” can do wonders.
Some negative people start for certain topics. ____18____ Simple things like new movies, daily occurrences, common friends, make for light conversation. Keep it to areas the person feels positive towards.
One way to help the negative person “get it” is to ignore the negative comments. If he/she goes into a negative state ignore it or give a simple “I see” or “OK” reply. On the other hand, when he/she is being positive, reply in affirmation (肯定) and enthusiasm. ____19____ He/she will adjust to be more positive accordingly.
____20____ If it’s a good friend, let him/her know of the seriousness of the problem and work it out where possible. It’s not healthy to spend too much time with people who drain (消耗) you. Your time is valuable, so spend it with people who have positive effects on you.
A. Negative people aren’t just negative to others.
B. Then you can bring in a new topic to lighten the atmosphere.
C. Learn to see the goodness of the person rather than the negative.
D. Do this often and soon he/she will know positivity pays off.
E. Their comments come across as complaints rather than requests.
F. If all else falls, reduce connection with them or avoid them altogether.
G. Whatever you say, they can find different reasons to back up their viewpoint.
G 17. E 18. B 19. D 20. F

People who live in the countryside generally live longer than those who live in the city. A number of reasons may also help explain this point.
To start with, farmers are in close contact with nature. They breathe fresh air. They make friends with trees and stones, cows and dogs. They listen to the songs of birds. They fight with strong winds. This contact with nature is good for the health of both body and spirits.
Next, hard physical work keeps farmers fit and healthy. It is widely believed that farmers suffer from far less diseases than people in the city. They are many diseases that are common in the city, but not in the countryside. For example, near-sightedness is almost unknown to farmers. Besides, being free from urban pressure does good to the health of farmers.
Moreover, because there are less cars, motorcars and other kinds of vehicles in the countryside, one can walk more freely without being afraid of accidents. The environment is better in the countryside, which makes the farmers live a quiet and peaceful life.
The farmers can also get fresh grain, vegetables, fruits and milk easily. They enjoy these advantages that people living in the city cannot.

B He refuses to compete with his peers fiercely.
C. His views on social values are well known.
D. He is content with his scholastic achievements.
5. Which role does the author play in his parents’ relationship
A A helper. B. A judge.
C

If he/she goes into a negative state, ignore it or give a simple “I see” or “OK” reply.
